Our JUROR: LIZ BONHAM

Liz grew up surrounded by creativity especially that of her father, a Houston architect who studied with Frank Lloyd Wright. When Liz was twelve, her father arranged lessons for her with Lowell Collins. As a young girl she admired the work of John Singer Sargent and the Impressionists because they knew how to capture the color of light. As a teenager Liz knew the dream to be a professional artist was possible and started her career as a Six Flags portrait artist for $10 per piece!

Liz graduated from Abilene Christian University with a BFA in Painting and continued on to graduate work in Art Education. Liz excelled as a commercial artist and illustrator for publishers including Harper Collins and Scholastic. Her most notable publication achievement was “The Crippled Lamb” by Max Lucado which sold almost two million copies and received the Gold Medallion Book Award. Because of her exceptional illustrations in Christian books and volunteer work, ACU further awarded her with their centennial “Change the World Award”.

Liz continues to experience the beauty and peace available by painting the grandeur of nature. Her plein air studies have taken her all over North America and Europe. It is not uncommon to find her and her husband trekking along the sides of cliffs and canyons looking for the next great painting location.
